 | |
| − | The Usual Restaurant
 | |
| − | You walk into a well lighted room, it's high ceilings lit by dozens of fluorescent lamps hanging from the ceiling. To the
 | |
| − | south and west are windows, which you would normally expect to see the outside world from, but looking out of them, you see
 | |
| − | only a misty gray haze. On the walls to the north and the east of the inn are an eclectic collection of paintings,
 | |
| − | photographs and even holographs of many cheap 1970's to 1980's B-movies. The bar on the east side is made out of hardwood,
 | |
| − | it's surface polished and shiny. Behind the bar, the various beverages that are served here are kept in relatively neat
 | |
| − | containers on wooden shelves. There is a large stage in one of the corners of the restaurant with a impressive sound system
 | |
| − | and a few microphones strung about it. Multiple round wood tables are in this room, near the north wall, is a double swing
 | |
| − | door that leads to the kitchen. On the east wall is a door leading to the UR's dance club and on the west one leading to
 | |
| − | the Gym. To the south, is the exit to the outside. A recent addition to the UR is a large fireplace against the west wall,
 | |
| − | it matches well to the rest of the restaurant and looks like it should have been there all along.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Sitting alone in the UR, the young Eva Pilot, is ... consuming, a meal consisting of precisely ordered amounts of defatted
 | |
| − | cream cheese, crackers and orange juice. She looks pale and blank. Wait a minute, Rei always looks pale and blank. Today
 | |
| − | she looks more so. Rei is seated at the bar.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet steps into the restaurant with a slight yawn as she approaches the bar.  She pauses halfway there, blinking at the
 | |
| − | sight of Rei at the bar.  With a light sigh, she deflates just a little and approaches, sitting in a seat two away from her
 | |
| − | to give the Eva pilot some space, but still easily close enough for conversation.  "...You're gonna get a lot of unwanted
 | |
| − | looks with that getup, Miss Ayanami."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei pauses mid-bite, puts her morsel down and turns empty handed to examine the person who just addressed her. There is a
 | |
| − | pause, as if she is evaluating the need for a reply. "I have already noted the problem." another pause. a slight narrowing
 | |
| − | of the eyes as yet another stranger takes liberty with her name. "Identify yourself."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet
 | |
| − | Long green hair contrasts with the red in her uniform.  She's wearing a jacket with a pattern on it like a red vest with
 | |
| − | white shoulders.  The jacket goes all the way down to her thighs, and is held close to her waist by a black belt, which has
 | |
| − | two holsters for her blasters.  There are markings on the upper arms marking her as a Lieutennant Commander.  Under the
 | |
| − | jacket she wears long black pants, all the way down to end over her black boots.  She seems fairly young, at the oldest in
 | |
| − | the early twenties, but more likely in her late teens, and has a relatively thin, athletic build.  If forced, she'll have
 | |
| − | on her red beret, but most likely she won't have that on.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet frowns slightly, recognizing the look of distaste.  "Lieutennant Commander Violet Karrde.  Uhhhh...   I guess you
 | |
| − | don't recognize my voice at all, do you?" She glances away with a terse sigh.  . o O ( Well, at least she can use personal
 | |
| − | pronouns. )  She then looks back to Rei with a shrug.  "Can't say I blame you, to be honest.  Not like I really did
 | |
| − | anything, in the end."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei nods, more an internal expression 'information noted'. "Against the Angel. The...Gundam?...pilot." the human file
 | |
| − | cabinet shuffles a few more files. "NeoTokyo Space Defense Fleet", Her final nod can be taken as a polite greeting. She
 | |
| − | then proceeds to pop a precise amount of cracker and cheese into her mouth and chew stolidly.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet raises an eyebrow and nods.  "Let me guess:  You figured that out from the 'didn't do anything' part more than
 | |
| − | anything else."  She sighs and shakes her head before turning to the bartender to order a club sandwich and orange soda
 | |
| − | .   She mutters something about women acting like robots under her breath, then shakes her head again.  "So if you've noted
 | |
| − | the problem...  why?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | The blue haired girl remains largely expressionless, then decides to offer a correction "I recognize authority." then
 | |
| − | appears to think some more before answering the question. "It is not an urgent concern..." there is a pause "I have seen
 | |
| − | the internet." Rei grows, if possible, more pale.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet tilts her head and grabs her soda as it arrives, raising an eyebrow at the announcement of seeing the internet.
 | |
| − |   "Well...  Good?"  She doesn't seem to get why seeing the internet is a thing worth talking about.  It's the worsening
 | |
| − | expression on Rei that finally gets it to click with her.  "Wait..   you didn't...  Google yourself, did you?  Please tell
 | |
| − | me you had safe search on..."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Now there is a blush on Ayanami's cheeks and her expression can only be described as utter befuddlement mixed with a healthy dose of mortification. "No." is her only answers. Two more precise doses of crackers and cheese are rapidly consumed.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet groans and facepalms.  "Oh, dear god.  There should be like a pamphlet or something for people that show up here...
 | |
| − |   and the first words should be 'Do not Google yourself without safe search on.'"  She sighs again, shaking her head for a
 | |
| − | moment before looking up again.  "You gonna be okay?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei eats some more precision portions of her dinner before answering. "It's not a problem." again a pause. "However, I am...
 | |
| − | Disappointed."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet blinks.  "Disappointed?   What, that they keep getting something wrong about you, or just in the fandom or humanity
 | |
| − | in general?   Because you're gonna have to get used to the fact that some of the more obsessive types can make up stuff
 | |
| − | that's..."   She frowns slightly, trying to come up with the right word.   "Scary," is what she settles for.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei shakes her head. "I am not frightened. I find it...distasteful." She eats some more cheese and crackers and washed it
 | |
| − | down with her first swig of orange juice. "The NTSDF will need help against the Angels."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet nods, assuming Rei just didn't delve deep enough to find the scary stuff. Like the guys that claim that a pillow with
 | |
| − | her likeness is their wife.  "W-well, uh, yeah, I guess.  I mean...  The whole...  AT field is kinda impenetrable except
 | |
| − | for you guys....   and apparently Artanis...   So yeah, we can't really do... anything against them, as I proved."  She
 | |
| − | then sighs again, leaning forward almost far enough to nearly hit her head against her sandwich as it is placed in front of
 | |
| − | her.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei nods thoughtfully. "A particle beam energized with all the power of Japan can penetrate an AT-Field. Perhaps larger
 | |
| − | ships in the fleet might have some effect."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet grabs half the sandwich(it came cut in half!) and munches on it as she raises an eyebrow at that line of thought.
 | |
| − |    "I'll have to see how that compares to Asgardian tech.  Maybe Phoenix can penetrate an AT-field with an orbital strike."
 | |
| − | She actually sounds serious at that.  "But then again, if my XO can just jump at an Angel and...  somehow cut into it, an
 | |
| − | orbital strike seems...  excessive."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei says, "I am unfamiliar with your executive officer."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet munches on another bite of her sandwhich and swallows before replying, "Do you remember the guy that...  jumped at
 | |
| − | the angel?  He wasn't human, has energy blades over his hands on his armor?   That's Artanis, who is now my XO on Phoenix.
 | |
| − | Not...  really sure why his blades worked, to be honest."   She shrugs to emphasize the point.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei says, "perhaps they were pure expressions of his will."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet looks upward, chewing on her thoughts as she chews a bite of her sandwich. "Well, I think he called them 'psi-blades'
 | |
| − | at one point, so...    I guess that kinda makes sense?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei says, "The AT Field is an artifact of Self. It is the ultimate barrier against the other."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet shakes her head.  "Yeah, I...  saw the show, it just..."   She sighs, her shoulders drooping as she does so.  "Only
 | |
| − | about half of it made any sense to me. The main thing I got about AT fields was...  'We need Evas to penetrate them.'"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei shakes her head. "In theory, all that is needed is an another AT Field."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet says, "Well, yeah, but the EVAs could do it, and pretty much nothing else could make one strong enough or
 | |
| − | something?"   She groans slightly.  "Can we talk about something else?  As far as I'm able to do, my only tactics are 'Send
 | |
| − | Artanis in' and 'Shoot at it with Asgardian tech guns from orbit.'"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei nods. "What do you wish to talk about?" she eats some more of her dinner. working though the square on the plate in
 | |
| − | efficient rows.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet says, "I..."   She pauses and frowns, then points to Rei.  "...How about why you're out eating in your, what was i
 | |
| − | t callled, plugsuit?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei ponders. "I need sustenance." She answers finally. as if that told the whole story.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet's left eye twitches.  "No, I mean..."  She suddenly drops her face into her palms.  "Oh, god, it's like talking to
 | |
| − | Killer Bee again."  She looks up again, a look of exasperation on her.  "Plugsuit.  Why?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei looks down and tugs at her plugsuit. "At the moment I have no other clothing."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet's left eye twitches.  "You've been here...  how many weeks?   Haven't they payed you anything yet?  I mean...  I
 | |
| − | assume if your EVA is on base, you're doing work for the NTSDF, right?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei says, "At the moment I appear to be. 'freeloading'." After a pause she adds. "I have acquired some currency though."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet says, "Yeah, Rei, first thing you need is...  clothes.  Maybe a hat or new hairstyle so you can avoid the fanboys."
 | |
| − |    She shakes her head.  "Once again, I am glad I'm from here instead of from a TV show."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei says, "I shall purchase some." she nods "That has already been decided."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet says drily, "I'd do that before going out to eat away from the barracks' mess hall.   Really, I know I've been known
 | |
| − | to wear skimpy clothes from time to time, but you look like you might as well have painted that suit on."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei finishes up her dinner and notes "It is vacuum sealed to maximize plug connectivity"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet frowns.  "I'd feel more exposed in that than in my halter top."  She pops the last of her own sandwich into her mouth.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei nods "It has not concerned me. However I shall purchase more clothing"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei pauses then looks over at Violet. "I do not know where to purchase clothes.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet nods.  "Right."   She downs the last of her drink, then looks around.  She seems to ponder for a moment, then says,
 | |
| − | "Well, I've nothing better to do tonight. Need help?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei ponders appropriate responses "Please?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei get's up and nods politely to Violet as she also puts money on the bar.
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet blinks and pauses a moment before laughing as she puts her own money down. "Somehow, that actually surprised me.
 | |
| − |    Sure, I can help ya out."  She stands up with a bit of a grin.  "I suppose a bus trip to the mall is in order?"
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Rei shakes her head. "I have transportation. I found it in the badlands."
 | |
| − |
 | |
| − | Violet blinks and raises an eyebrow.  "Alright, then, you drive?"  Rei looks a little young to be driving to Violet, but....   Hey, it's NeoTokyo.  As such, she shrugs.
