* The statistics provided on this page represent the "fully operational" statistics of the Vesuvius. These do not currently apply as the ship is under heavy construction and has not officially been released into active service.
Originally launched in 2260, the USS Vesuvius completed her original five year mission with flying colors. It was during the time of her first refit, however, that things went wrong. The ship was intended to be the test bed for a new class of Warp Engines, one capable of surpassing the maximum speed of every ship in the Star Fleet. With it's upgraded status the Vesuvius would have been used designated a fast response star ship capable of outpacing even the fastest opposition to go directly to the front lines in the event of a conflict. However this was not meant to be.
During her first real test of the new engines a catastrophic failure resulted in the two nacelles being ripped from the hull, destroying a huge chunk of the hull of the ship. Furthermore the overload sent the engines into overdrive, generating such a massive output of energy that the ship would have exploded in much the same way as an auto-destruct sequence. At the cost of his own life, Chief Medical Officer Caliga Saunders evacuated the Engineering Decks and shutdown the engines - saving the remaining crew on board.
After exploration teams ventured into an unstable region of space known as the Hideki Sector, the partially repaired Vesuvius was deemed an acceptable loss if destroyed. The ship and a skeleton crew where then sent into the Hideki Sector to take readings of a massive tear in the fabric of space-time referred to by Starfleet as SEH-01. There they discovered INFORMATION BEYOND THIS POINT IS CURRENTLY CLASSIFIED BY GENERAL ORDER 459.231.
